Activity:
The objective of this weeks planned activity was to provide the opportunity for the children to create self-portraits using natural resources. They could use such things as chalk, pen, paint, charcoal, mud, leaves, sticks, paper, stones, card, seeds or feathers to create their portraits. Through this activity the children were able to identify similarities and differences between themselves and their peers. After they
had created their own self-portrait, they were encouraged to do a portrait of a friend and so would be working in pairs. This activity can be interlinked to all seven areas of the Early Years Foundation stages of learning (see above).
We talked about each others facial features and what makes each person unique. We also discussed what media to use and how to go about creating our self-portraits.
Home Activity:
With your child, try making your own Mr or Mrs Potato Head. Use a large baking potato and see what interesting objects from around the home can be used for the eyes, ears, mouth, nose and any other feature your child would like to include.
