Activity:

For this weeks activity we asked the children if they wanted to make decorated cards to send to a special person (or persons). We started by talking about cards that people sometimes send to each other around Christmas time. This led onto an interesting discussion about how different religions celebrate Christmas and how some others don't. We talked about Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Judaism amongst others and also about people who are not religious but sometimes still choose to celebrate certain festivals. We talked about how important family and friends are and how it can be a nice thing to think about other people. We discussed how it makes you feel when you give someone a card or present and how you feel when you receive one.

To make the cards the children chose from a variety of thick coloured paper and then decided to either stick, draw or paint on them. After they had finished their designs we helped them put them into envelopes and then wrote their addresses on the front. We showed the children where to stick the stamps and talked about what they were for.

It was then time to go and post the cards. We walked to the nearest postbox and along the way we looked at road signs. The children posted their own cards and we walked back to site. Once we were back we talked about the postal system and how postal delivery workers deliver our mail by looking at road names and then house numbers. We asked the children if they knew their own address.

Home Activity:

Following on from last week's fire safety talk and what the emergency services telephone number is, try and teach your child their home address. Ask them to make another card, give them a stamp to put on it and then walk together to your local postbox to help them post it. Ask them what they think will happen to their card..?
