Activity:
The children were encouraged to work together to produce a piece of art using different natural materials. We started by placing a large wooden frame on the ground and asking the children to collect some colourful items from around the site to make a collage within the frame. They could use things like brightly coloured autumn leaves, sticks and twigs, feathers, grass, pinecones, stones, bark, fallen branches, slate and berries to make their group artwork.
They also made another picture using corn flour and flour and used their hands/sticks/leaves to move the flour into different patterns. They then extended this by adding water and food colouring to the corn flour to see if they could make some more interesting patterns and added a variety of paints.
We talked about different patterns and colours and how, by working together, we could create a wonderful picture for them all to look at and enjoy. We encouraged them to share their items with each other and jointly agree on where to put them. We discussed the different textures of the things they found - were they rough, smooth, spiky, spongy, hard, soft, crinkly or slimy for example?
Home Activity:
Make a picture as a family. Make sure that everyone gets involved and adds something, whether they colour, stick or paint etc. See how many differing types of materials you can use and remember to upload your finished masterpieces on Tapestry for us all to see!
