Activity:
For our exciting first week back at forest school, we taught the children how to make a leaf garland/necklace that they could take home to show their family or friends. The children made two different types:
1. They used a hole punch to make holes in brightly coloured leaves and then a small twig as a needle and thread to thread the leaves onto a piece of string to make a necklace.
2. They used a paper plate as backing, cut a hole in the center and then attached leaves around the outside either using a hole punch/twig to thread or a stapler.
We encouraged the children to talk about and show each other the different leaves they had found and also to think about the changes that occur from Summer going into Autumn. They also practiced knot tying with their necklace and helped to expand their vocabulary by trying to name the trees that the leaves came from.
Home Activity:
Go to a wood, park or just your own garden, collect some fallen leaves with your child and then try to identify which trees the leaves came from. Either use a book or computer to help do this and encourage the children when they guess correctly. Talk about the changes in seasons and why leaves fall from trees. Can they name any other changes that happen?
