Activity:
We provided lots of different things for the children to smell before mixing their perfume recipe such as:-
Cinnamon • Thyme • Rosemary • Lavender • Mint • Garlic • Basil • Sage
We counted and sorted the items, cutting things where necessary. We used a pestle and mortar to grind the items together and a grater for shedding. We also used a funnel to dilute the mixture with water and then used either a muslin cloth for straining and a sieve to pour the perfume mixture into bottles.
We talked about the different things they could use for their perfume, different smells ("what smells nice/not so nice"?), how people like different smells, what we use our nose for and how it can help us to make decisions.
Home Activity:
Let your children choose and smell different perfumes or aftershaves and discuss which ones they like/don't like and why. Ask them to try and describe the varying smells - "Does it smell sweet"?, "does it smell strong"?, "does it smell nice"? or "does it pong"? ;o)
