Activity:
We start the activity by asking the children about the country they live in as well as other countries they have an interest in, which flag those countries have and what the colours and shapes on the flags represent. We talk about the differences and similarities of different flags and the children then choose which one they would like to make and take home. We start to make the flag by looking for a thick stick for the mast and take the opportunity to talk about the differences between the sticks that we find e.g. is the stick thick or thin? Is it long or short? Is it straight or bent?
The next step for the children is to cut the fabric to size with a pair of scissors. We then ask them to attach the fabric to the stick using a hammer and some thin nails. We count the nails with the children as we do so.
Additional activities include talking about different flags and what language is spoken in the country the flag represents, asking where the children would like to travel and together, search on the tablet for the flag of their chosen destination. We then make that flag as well.
Home Activity:
Show the children lots of different flags either from a book or search on a computer together and ask them to choose one they like. Talk to them about that country and encourage them to ask questions about it. Discuss what the similarities and differences are between the country they live in and the country of the flag they chose.
